The Power of Goals

The Power of Goals

We all have goals and aspirations, some of which we know are unreachable and others that we work on every day to achieve. Goals are powerful things, and they can be extremely useful tools for staying happy and healthy, but when improperly used they can be very damaging so knowing how to create realistic goals is an important skill. When setting attainable goals its important to be honest with yourself about your abilities and the time you can commit. You might be a skilled writer, but without the time to actually put pen-to-paper your magnum opus will never be written. This doesn’t mean you should give up on writing a book, rather it’s important to break that overarching goal down into meaningful steps. This may include altering your schedule, so you can find time to write, researching what you want to write about, and connecting with other authors for support. These small steps set up your future goal of writing your novel and accomplishing them will help show you that you can finish what you set your mind to. This can-do attitude is an important thing to cultivate and grow, as it will spread to the rest of your life; you may soon find yourself able to do things that you never thought you’d be able to do before. Pursuing your goals requires you to be adaptable, as your plan on Day 1 will most certainly not match what needs to be done on Day 25, but you’ll learn how to adapt.

And while setting, and achieving your goals, is important the real power of them comes from the skills necessary to complete them. Being able to take an honest inventory of yourself is the basis from which all good goals are formed, and that ability is critical to maintaining your mental health. Looking in the mirror and admitting that you’re talented at something, or that you’re hurting and need someone to talk to is a powerful thing. The positive internal dialogue you create by knowing where you’re strong, and how you can continue to improve, is the foundation of managing your well-being. The same goes for being brave enough to own your pain and that you need outside assistance because reaching out to mental health practitioners or your support network can be a daunting task. These are just two examples of the healthy coping mechanisms and are part of what we strive to impart on anyone who steps through our doors. These skills may seem simple, but mastering them will help you live a happier, healthier, and more fulfilled life; at Colombia Wellness, that’s what we aim to give our patients. Your treatment may begin from the moment you step through our doors, but your experience here will continue to shape your life in positive ways for many years afterwards.
